Three Super Eagles Players Who Should Be Dropped for Upcoming AFCON Matches

The Super Eagles of Nigeria began their AFCON 2025 campaign with a narrow victory over Tanzania, but the overall performance left much to be desired. Several players failed to impress, and head coach Eric Chelle may need to make changes ahead of Nigeria’s next group fixtures to improve the team’s display. Below are three Super Eagles players who could be replaced in upcoming AFCON matches.

1. Stanley Nwabali
Although he had little to do for most of the game, Nwabali’s performance raised concerns whenever he was called into action. He appeared shaky and lacked the composure expected of Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Pulse Sports rated his display 4/10, citing his reaction during Tanzania’s equaliser. Instead of positioning himself to stop Charles’ effort, Nwabali appealed for an offside call, a decision that proved costly. On current form, a change between the posts may be necessary.

2. Bright Osayi-Samuel
Osayi-Samuel struggled to make a meaningful impact from the right flank and received a 5/10 rating for his performance against Tanzania. While his defensive contribution was fairly solid, he offered little going forward against a side that posed minimal attacking threat.

As a modern full-back, consistency in attacking play—especially in delivering crosses—is crucial. Osayi-Samuel often looked uncertain in advanced positions, limiting service to attackers like Victor Osimhen, who thrives on quality balls into the box.

3. Zaidu Sanusi
Unlike his opposite number, who at least contributed defensively, Sanusi failed to influence the game at either end of the pitch. Pulse Sports rated his outing 4/10 after an underwhelming display.

Tanzania’s goal originated from his flank, with Charles getting past him as Sanusi appeared unaware of the danger. He also struggled to provide attacking support from left-back, which negatively affected the team’s overall balance and performance.

With tougher opponents ahead, Chelle may need to rethink his selections to ensure the Super Eagles deliver stronger and more convincing performances in their remaining AFCON matches.
