Edo Ika Igbo Communities Back Anioma State Creation, Seek Inclusion in Proposed State

By Anne Azuka

Ika Igbo–speaking communities in Edo State have declared support for the proposed creation of Anioma State and its alignment with Nigeria’s South-East geopolitical zone, while urging authorities to include their communities in the new state. The position was announced during a gathering of community leaders, youths, elders, and stakeholders in Igbanke, Edo State. The meeting was coordinated by Apostle Azuka Okah under the platform The Voice of the Indigenous Ika Igbo Initiative in Edo State.

Representatives of the communities said their support reflects long-standing concerns about development and representation in their areas. Communities mentioned include Iru, Igbanke, Ogbagie, Igbo-Giri, Owa Ri Uzo, Otobaye, Oghada, Ute-Oha-Eze, Ekpon, and neighbouring settlements.

According to the group, recognising Anioma as part of the South-East could promote equity, national unity, and balanced development. They said the communities share cultural and linguistic ties with Anioma communities in Delta State and other Igbo-speaking areas.Speakers at the event also highlighted infrastructure challenges in their communities, including road conditions, healthcare access, and water supply, and called for greater government attention.

The group acknowledged the advocacy of Senator Ned Nwoko, who represents Delta North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, for promoting the Anioma State proposal. They appealed to the Federal Government and the National Assembly to consider the views expressed by their communities during deliberations on state creation. In his remarks, Apostle Azuka Okah urged residents to pursue peaceful advocacy and constructive engagement with relevant authorities on the issue.
