Nollywood veteran Pete Edochie has voiced deep frustration over the high cost of maintaining electricity in Nigeria amid the country’s ongoing power challenges.

Speaking during an interview with AIT, the 78-year-old actor disclosed that he spends roughly ₦40,000 every day just to keep his home supplied with electricity.

According to him, about ₦10,000 goes to purchasing electricity units from the national distribution company. In addition, he spends ₦20,000 on diesel to power his generator and another ₦10,000 on petrol for a separate generator, bringing his daily electricity expenses to about ₦40,000.

Edochie lamented that the situation is troubling, stressing that the burden of such costs on ordinary Nigerians is often overlooked. He criticised political leaders whom he believes are more focused on gaining power rather than addressing the daily struggles faced by citizens.

His remarks reflect the growing dissatisfaction among Nigerians over the country’s unstable electricity supply. In recent weeks, many residents have taken to social media to complain about prolonged outages and inadequate power distribution.

For instance, consumers placed in Band A—who are expected to receive up to 22 hours of electricity daily under the government’s tiered power system—report that they sometimes get less than five hours of supply, highlighting the persistent issues within Nigeria’s electricity sector.
