Court Allows PDP Factions Settle Convention Dispute Out of Court

The Court of Appeal sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State, has granted parties involved in the disputed elective convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) permission to pursue an out-of-court settlement.

Justice Biobele Georgewill, who led a three-member panel, approved the request on Wednesday and adjourned the case sine die to allow the parties explore a peaceful resolution.

Georgewill urged counsel representing the factions to prioritise reconciliation in the interest of the party, especially with the timetable for the 2027 general elections already released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“The court has granted leave for settlement in this matter and adjourned the case sine die to allow parties to meet individually or collectively to resolve the dispute peacefully,” the judge said, adding that the court should be informed in writing of any outcome reached.

The dispute stems from the PDP elective convention held in Ibadan. Earlier this week, the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja invalidated the convention, while a separate ruling by Justice Ladiran Akintola of the Oyo State High Court had previously upheld it.

The suit was filed by Folahan Adelabi through Senior Advocate of Nigeria Musibau Adetunmbi.

Speaking after the proceedings, Senior Advocate of Nigeria Sunday Ibrahim said the parties had agreed to explore settlement options and would report back to the court if an agreement is reached.
