EFCC Arrests 31 Suspects in Alleged Cybercrime Training Centre in Abuja

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it has arrested 31 suspects in connection with an alleged cybercrime training centre, commonly referred to as a “Yahoo academy,” in Karu, Abuja.

In a statement issued by EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, the commission said the arrests were made during a sting operation at a facility in Becki Estate, Federal Capital Territory. The suspects, described as including alleged organisers and trainees, were apprehended while undergoing what the EFCC characterised as internet fraud-related training.

Items recovered at the scene include mobile phones, 18 laptops, and other electronic devices. According to the commission, preliminary investigations indicate that some of the trainees were recruited from different states, including Benue, with promises of employment.

The EFCC alleged that upon arrival, they were provided with devices and software for suspected fraudulent activities. The agency further alleged that the recruits were housed within the facility with restricted movement, and that disciplinary measures were enforced internally. These claims have not been independently verified. The EFCC said the suspects will be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
