CAIDER profiles Senator Nora Daduut as beacon of language education, service, African integration

By Israel Adamu, Jos

The maiden edition of The Dove, the official bulletin of the Centre for African Integration, Development and Research, has spotlighted Nora Ladi Daduut as a symbol of excellence in language education, public service and African integration.

In its “Personality Profile” section, the publication described Senator Daduut—a professor, former senator representing Plateau South, and Nigeria’s current non-career ambassador-designate to South Korea—as a bridge between Nigeria and Francophone Africa through education, diplomacy and community development.

According to the profile, Daduut’s career reflects how language education and public service can intersect to advance regional cooperation and development. A seasoned academic and administrator, she studied in Dakar and Tours before earning a PhD in French as a Foreign Language. Her academic journey, the bulletin noted, laid the foundation for decades of service in teaching and promoting the French language in Nigeria.

She co-authored French language primers used in primary schools and coordinated Plateau State’s Centre for French Teaching and Documentation, where she supervised teacher training and school inspections. The publication stated that her work in curriculum development and teacher education improved access to French learning and equipped young Nigerians with a language crucial for regional connectivity in West and Central Africa.

Beyond the classroom, Daduut founded and chaired Alliance Française, where she promoted cultural exchange and cross-cultural understanding. She was also actively involved in the University French Teachers’ Association of Nigeria and other national professional bodies that shaped the teaching of French in the country.

As Deputy Director and Inspector of French Programmes, she reportedly championed cultural activities such as drama, debates and festivals aimed at embedding French language and culture within communities. Her transition into politics, according to CAIDER, did not diminish her commitment to education and development. As the first female senator from Plateau State, she used her legislative office to advocate education, women empowerment and constituency development. The bulletin highlighted projects she facilitated, including ICT centres, classroom construction, training grants and agricultural empowerment schemes.

CAIDER quoted Daduut as saying: “Politics is giving service to humanity and not pursuing our personal interests.”On women’s leadership, she said: “As women, we must strive to add value to our goals rather than give up in the face of challenges. This means collaborating with the menfolk as partners in progress.”The profile described her philosophy as one rooted in service, empowerment and cross-border cooperation. Even in retirement, the publication said Daduut remains active in farming and continues to champion French language education through manuals and community-based programmes.

In recognition of her humanitarian service, the late Pope Benedict XVI conferred on her the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice award. She was also recently appointed by Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Nigeria’s non-career ambassador-designate to South Korea. CAIDER said Daduut’s life and career align with its mission of fostering African integration and development through language education, cultural exchange and public service.

The Centre noted that her achievements provide a practical model for advancing integration through investment in teachers, educational materials, cultural institutions and people-centred policies. The bulletin concluded that Senator Prof. Nora Daduut remains a reminder that Africa’s future can be built through knowledge, diplomacy and committed service.
