The Police in Akwa Ibom has successfully averted what could have been a major security breach and potential tragedy at the Nigerian Correctional Service Custodial Centre, Ikot Ekpene, following the timely recovery of high explosive ordnance within the facility’s vicinity.
Meanwhile, the Command, in a coordinated joint operation with operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has successfully secured the release of all fourteen (14) victims abducted by sea pirates along the Calabar–Oron waterways
A statement issued by the State PPRO, Timfon John and made available to newsmen in Uyo yesterday said this followed a credible intelligence received from Correctional authorities regarding suspicious items discovered around the custodial facility
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, immediately ordered the deployment of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, BomPol Base 38, Uyo, alongside other tactical teams to secure the area.
“A coordinated search and sweep operation led to the recovery items including two 90mm high explosive rounds, 45 centimeters (45cm) length of burning fuse, One (1) pair of pincers, One (1) flat screwdriver, Two (2) pieces of 12mm iron chisels and One (1) six centimeters (6cm) conduit iron pipe.” The statement said.
It said the EOD team professionally rendered the explosive devices safe, thereby neutralizing any imminent threat and preventing possible loss of lives and destruction of critical infrastructure.
The Command it said has reinforced security around the Correctional Facility and its environs, with increased surveillance, access control, and continuous patrols to deter any further threats while discreet investigation and technical analysis have commenced to determine the origin of the explosives and to apprehend all individuals connected to the act.
“”The Commissioner of Police reassures residents that the situation is fully under control, with no casualties recorded, and urges members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious persons or items promptly.
“The Command remains resolute, proactive, and ever ready to protect lives and property across the State.” It said.
The statement said the operation to rescue the kidnapped students followed sustained intelligence-driven efforts, robust inter-agency collaboration, and relentless pressure mounted on criminal elements operating within the maritime corridor.
“Acting on credible intelligence, joint operatives intensified surveillance and launched targeted operations across identified flashpoints, culminating in the safe rescue of all victims without any loss of life.
“The rescued victims are currently undergoing medical evaluation and treatment, alongside necessary debriefing, before being reunited with their families.” The statement added.
It further stated that efforts have been intensified to track down and apprehend the perpetrators behind the abduction and reassured residents, maritime operators, and the general public of enhanced security presence along the waterways urging continued cooperation through the provision of timely and credible information.
