Kaduna Marks World Press Freedom Day, Reaffirms Commitment to Media Independence

By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

Kaduna State has reaffirmed its commitment to press freedom as it joined the global community to mark World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) 2026.

In a statement, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Ahmed Maiyaki, said the theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace,” highlights the role of a free and responsible media in promoting peace, human rights, and sustainable development. The global observance was anchored by a UNESCO conference in Lusaka, Zambia.

Maiyaki said the administration of Governor Uba Sani remains committed to upholding constitutional guarantees that allow journalists to operate without undue interference. “The media remains a cornerstone of democratic governance—informing citizens, shaping public discourse, and strengthening accountability,” he said. He noted that rising concerns over misinformation and disinformation make accurate and ethical journalism increasingly important to public trust and social cohesion.

According to the commissioner, Kaduna State will continue to support media professionalism, protect journalists, and promote responsible reporting practices. He added that the ministry plans to strengthen collaboration with media stakeholders and support initiatives aimed at improving capacity and countering false information. Maiyaki urged stakeholders to uphold the values of truth, responsibility, and mutual respect to foster a peaceful and informed society.
