Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels and former New York City mayoral candidate, has sparked controversy following strong remarks about the British monarchy during an appearance on Piers Morgan Uncensored.
Speaking with host Piers Morgan, Sliwa argued that public celebrations surrounding the U.S. visit of King Charles III overlook what he described as a long and troubling history of British imperial actions that have never been properly addressed.
The debate intensified after Morgan challenged Sliwa’s earlier description of the Royal Family as “welfare cheats” and “idle.” Morgan pointed to King Charles III’s extensive schedule of official engagements in 2025—even while undergoing cancer treatment—as evidence that such criticism was unfair.
However, Sliwa rejected that view and shifted the discussion toward colonial history. He cited issues such as the removal of cultural artifacts during British rule in India and the role of Indian soldiers in World War II, arguing that their sacrifices were not fully recognized or compensated.
He went further by referencing Britain’s role during the Great Famine, claiming that policies under Queen Victoria contributed to the deaths of a large number of Irish people. Sliwa argued that Britain has never formally apologized for these events and that such historical issues should not be ignored in modern diplomatic contexts.
Morgan pushed back, noting that few nations or institutions have entirely clean historical records over centuries. While acknowledging certain issues within Britain, he defended a more balanced perspective on the monarchy’s present-day role.
The exchange ended on a lighter note, with Morgan joking about preferring American cultural icons like Mickey Mouse over monarchy—bringing a tense discussion to a more humorous close.
