Energy expert advocates incentives for players in power sector

An Energy Expert, Mr AbdulHafis Sadiq, has advocated for incentives from government to encourage various players in the power sector to enhance desirable results.

Sadiq made the call while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) after his presentation at the 61st session of Greeners Hub B2B Nigeria in Abuja on Sunday.

According to him, in most developed countries, incentives are given to individuals who lighten their homes, those who deal in energy equipment as well as those producing and importing them.

The idea, he said, was to bridge the gap in a fast and efficient way that would lead to power stability.

The expert, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Eclipse Power, added that individuals should be encouraged to take care of their power needs, with some incentives.

“There is something we call democratisation of power, which means every individual will be free to get his/her source of energy or where people will take care of the energy they need in their homes.

“Achieving this, the grid can receive power from the rooftop solar energy in people’s homes. After utilisation, the excess will go to the national grid.

“When we have this type of system, we won’t have problem of the grid going down or shutting down, and our national grid will be better for it in the end,” he said.

Sadiq said that adding to the energy mix policy introduced by the present administration was the way to go.

He said that combination and expansion of different sources of energy, like coal, solar, hydro and thermal, were the right step in the right direction.

The expert also decried what he called unnecessary delay in clearing imported energy equipment at the ports.

He noted that though government had introduced ease of doing business, where such items were expected to be cleared within 24 hours, in reality, the implementation was still slow at the ports, with a lot of bottlenecks. (NAN)
