African Cherry: Plant Found To Affect Fertility In Men

A priority indeginous fruit tree in Nigeria with distribution across West Africa called Cherry also known as Chrysophyllum albidum is a small to medium dependence tree species, up to 25-37 in height with a mature girth varying from 1.5 to 2m.

A new research have shown that the African Cherry may damage fertility in men due to its ethanolic root bark extract. The plant is used in traditional/ alternative medicine in Nigeria to treat several health problems.

The plant is a rich source of natural antioxidants established to act against oxidative stress related disease such as diabetics, Cancer and Coronary heart diseases. Its bark is also used to treat yellow fever and malaria and its leaf is used as emolient and for the treatment of skin eruption, stomach ache and diarrhea.

Also, the cotyledons from the seeds are used as ointments in the treatment of vaginal and dermatological infections in the western part of Nigeria and also hypergylcemic and hypolipidemic effects, among other health  research benefits.

Nonetheless, research have shown that African Cherry herbs can also have an effect against fertility in men. The fruit belongs to the plant family Sapotaceae, is an edible tropical fruits known by various tribal names called Agbalumo in Yoruba, Udela in Ibo, Efik, Ehya in Igala, Agwaluma in Hausa tribes in Nigeria.
