ITF screens 225,000 artisans nationwide for global certification, jobs
By Israel Adamu
The Industrial Training Fund, ITF, has commenced the nationwide screening of 225,000 practicing artisans under its Skill Up Artisans (SUPA) programme, a Federal Government initiative designed to equip Nigerian artisans with globally competitive skills, internationally recognised certification and access to employment and business opportunities.
Director of the ITF’s Technical and Vocational Skills Training Department, Mrs. Nancy Ndidiamaka Ekong, disclosed this in Jos on Tuesday while speaking with journalists during the screening exercise
She said the exercise is being conducted simultaneously across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, as part of efforts to implement President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda by improving the livelihoods of skilled workers.
According to Ekong, the programme is specifically targeted at practicing artisans and should not be mistaken for an empowerment scheme.
“This programme is not an empowerment programme. It is meant for practicing artisans who already have skills. Whether you are a tailor, plumber, electrician or in any other trade, we are helping you improve your competence and become globally competitive,” she said.
She explained that while many Nigerian artisans possess technical skills, they often lack the professional work ethics, customer relations and aesthetic standards required to compete in today’s labour market.
“Our goal is to improve not only their technical competence but also their attitude to work and professionalism so they can compete favourably with artisans anywhere in the world,” she added.
Ekong disclosed that participants would undergo training free of charge, stressing that the ITF would pay the master trainers while beneficiaries would receive transportation stipends throughout the programme.
She said the training, which lasts three and a half months, also provides internationally recognised certification that would enhance participants’ employability within and outside Nigeria.
Highlighting the programme’s benefits, she said successful participants would exit through three pathways ,business incubation with technical and financial support, job placement with employers within Nigeria, and opportunities for overseas employment where skilled artisans are in demand.
“Some participants will have their businesses incubated and supported financially and technically. Others will be linked with employers of labour, while some will have opportunities to work outside Nigeria because many countries require skilled artisans,” she said.
Reviewing the first phase of the programme, Ekong described it as a success, noting that beneficiaries had completed both technical and soft skills training and were currently undergoing certification examinations.
She said the certification exercise had already been concluded in Abuja, where the pilot phase was conducted, adding that it would be extended to other states before the commencement of business incubation for successful participants.
According to her, tailors constituted the largest group of artisans trained during the pilot phase.
She expressed confidence that the programme would improve the quality of Nigeria’s skilled workforce, enhance productivity and create sustainable livelihoods for thousands of artisans across the country.

The Forum of APC Renewed Hope Appointees has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State and mobilising support for the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The resolution was reached during the forum’s inaugural meeting held at the Kano State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja.
In a communiqué issued after the meeting, the forum urged residents of Kano State to remain united, peaceful and continue supporting the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that such support would contribute to the state’s and the nation’s continued development.
The forum also congratulated President Tinubu on his emergence as the APC presidential candidate for the 2027 election, alongside Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate. Members pledged to work towards delivering the highest possible votes for the APC presidential ticket in Kano State during the election.

Delta’s IGR Surpasses ₦200bn as RMAFC Commends Oborevwori’s Diversification Drive
By Anne Azuka
Delta State has increased its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) from about ₦84 billion in 2023 to over ₦200 billion, representing a growth of more than 138 per cent, as the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori intensifies efforts to diversify the state’s economy beyond oil.
The development was disclosed on Monday in Asaba during a visit by a delegation of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to assess the state’s economic diversification and revenue generation initiatives.
Commissioner for Economic Planning, Mr. Sunny Ekedayen, said the state had deliberately repositioned its economy through investments in agriculture, industrialisation, innovation and other non-oil sectors.
He explained that the significant increase in IGR was achieved without raising personal income tax, attributing the growth to an expanded tax base, improved tax administration, stronger compliance and more efficient revenue collection.
Ekedayen noted that agriculture had become a key pillar of the state’s diversification strategy through Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), with the government providing land while private investors supplied capital and technology for large-scale cultivation of crops such as cassava and oil palm.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Finance, Chief Fidelis Tilije, said the government was strengthening industrialisation through strategic infrastructure investments. He disclosed that the Kwale Industrial Park would soon be fully energised to attract more investors.
Tilije added that efforts were also underway to revive maritime activities through improved collaboration with the Federal Government on the Warri and Forcados ports.
Leader of the RMAFC delegation, Mr. Victor Eboigbe, described Nigeria’s dependence on oil revenue as unsustainable and commended Delta State’s commitment to economic diversification.
He said the assessment was in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and praised Governor Oborevwori’s administration for implementing policies aimed at building a resilient and sustainable economy.
The Federal Commissioner representing Delta State in the RMAFC, Hon. Aruviere Martins Egwarhevwa, said the visit formed part of the commission’s constitutional mandate to assess states’ diversification efforts and strengthen collaboration on fiscal development.
The delegation expressed satisfaction with Delta State’s economic transformation initiatives and urged the government to sustain the momentum in expanding non-oil revenue sources.
