KYGG Accuses Banks of Overcharging Customers, Demands Refunds
By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna
The Kaduna Youth for Good Governance (KYGG), a civil society organisation, has accused some banks and financial institutions of allegedly imposing charges that violate the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) revised Guide to Charges.
In a statement signed by its chairman, Aliyu Modibbo, the group said its monitoring indicated that some customers were still being charged fees that the CBN guide, which took effect on May 1, 2026, had scrapped, capped or made free.
KYGG alleged that some customers were still paying card maintenance fees despite their removal under the guide. It also raised concerns about ATM withdrawal charges, paid email transaction alerts and point-of-sale (POS) charges.
The organisation further alleged that some banks were failing to inform customers about their right to negotiate charges classified as negotiable under the CBN guidelines. “The CBN guide was designed to bring fairness, transparency and relief to Nigerians. But what we are seeing is the opposite,” the group said. KYGG called on the CBN and other regulators to conduct a nationwide audit of bank charges and sanction institutions found to be in breach.
It also demanded refunds for customers allegedly overcharged since May 1, 2026, alongside stronger consumer education and a fast-response complaints mechanism. The group said it would continue documenting alleged cases of non-compliance and advocating for greater transparency in the banking sector.
