A’Ibom must reconnect to the centre

By Emeka Samuel, Uyo

Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to President Muhammadu Buhari on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang, has underscored the importance of Akwa Ibom state being reconnected to the government at the centre, stating that “the state stand to lose a lot from playing opposition”.

This is coming on the heels of an abysmal performance by the ruling APC in the last month national elections

Addressing newsmen at the weekend in Uyo Enang noted that it would be unhealthy for the state to remain in isolation from national politics for another four years.

According to him, the return of President Buhari for another four years by Nigerians put the state in a vantage position to relaunch itself back, pointing that the last four years of the APC government at the centre has priced the state out of favour.

He explained that the return of the APC at the centre was enough encouragement and easy leeway towards drawing more federal presence into the State.

“We should be encouraged by the the return of President Buhari and the APC to key the state to the central government”, he said, pointing out that the onshore\offshore oil dichotomy war fought and won by the Akwa Ibom and other leaders of Niger Delta could not have been possible if the state was in opposition during the era of Mr. Olusegun Obasanjo.” Enang reasoned.

He, therefore, enjoined the people of the state to ensure the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) – led government of Mr. Udom Emmanuel, was displaced at the ballot in March 9, 2019 election.

Enang, who flayed the outcome of the last Presidential and National Assembly elections, which saw APC winning in just two out of the 31 Local Government Areas and PDP winning the three Senatorial seats and 10 Federal Constituencies, assured that the anomaly would be corrected at the courts.

He insisted that the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mr. Mike Igini, compromised his integrity “by taking the side of PDP even when he was supposed to be impartial”
