Abuja Airport Temporarily Shut Down After Aero Aircraft Overshoots Runway

Must read

The Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) in Abuja was temporarily closed after a Boeing 737 aircraft with registration number 5N-BYQ, operated by Aero Contractors, experienced a bad landing. The incident occurred on Sunday when the aircraft, departing from the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA) in Lagos, faced difficulties upon landing at NAIA.

Dr. James Odaudu, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), confirmed the incident in a statement. The aircraft’s nose wheel became stuck in the grass verge with its fuselage on the runway during the landing, leading to the closure of the runway until the aircraft could be towed away.

Fortunately, there were no reported fatalities or injuries. The NSIB has initiated an immediate investigation into the cause of the incident and is seeking information from the public, including pictures, videos, or recording evidence, to aid in the comprehensive inquiry.

Odaudu urged the public to refrain from making assumptions about the cause of the incident and to respect the privacy of those on board until the formal report is released by the agency. Flights operations have since resumed after the necessary measures were taken to clear the runway.
