Abuja Residents to Face Two-Week Power Outages Starting Monday

By Abigail Philip David

Residents in parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are set to experience significant power outages for two weeks, beginning Monday, January 6, 2025.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) announced that the outages are due to the relocation of critical infrastructure, including the 33KV DC Airport Feeder and 132KV Kukwaba-Apo Transmission Line Towers, along the Outer Southern Expressway.

In a statement shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Friday, AEDC confirmed the disruptions would last from January 6 to January 21.

Affected Areas
The company listed the areas that will be affected by the outages, including:
– Lugbe & environs: Airport Road, Kapwa, NNPC, Games Village, National Stadium, and Eye Clinic.
– Others: Indoor Complex, Christ Embassy Church, American International School, Spring Court, American Embassy Quarters, EFCC Headquarters, Coca-Cola, Railway, FMC, and parts of Apo.
– Additional locations include parts of Gudu, Gbazango, Kubwa, Bwari, Jahi, Jabi, Karu, Nyanya, Mararaba, Keffi, and their environs.

“We regret any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding,” the AEDC statement added.

Context and Concerns
The development comes just a week after the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) conducted maintenance work at two key transmission substations in Gwagwalada. Despite such efforts, FCT residents have continued to raise concerns about inconsistent power supply in the region.

This planned operation is expected to compound existing frustrations among residents, many of whom already face irregular electricity access. AEDC has assured the public that the relocation is necessary for infrastructure upgrades and will ultimately improve service delivery in the long term.
