AFCON 2025 final: CAF suspends Hakimi, Thiaw, fines Senegal, Morocco

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed multiple sanctions on Senegal, Morocco and several players and officials following disciplinary breaches during and after the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final in Rabat.

In a statement on Wednesday, CAF said its Disciplinary Board acted over violations of the CAF Disciplinary Code, including breaches of fair play, loyalty and integrity.

For Senegal, head coach Pape Bouna Thiaw was suspended for five official CAF matches and fined $100,000 for unsporting conduct and bringing the game into disrepute. Players Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr were each suspended for two CAF matches for unsporting behaviour toward the referee.

The Fédération Sénégalaise de Football (FSF) was fined a total of $615,000, including $300,000 for supporters’ misconduct, $300,000 for unsporting conduct by players and technical staff, and $15,000 after five players were cautioned.

For Morocco, defender Achraf Hakimi was suspended for two CAF matches, with one match suspended for one year, for unsporting behaviour. Midfielder Ismaël Saibari received a three-match suspension and a $100,000 fine.

The Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF) was fined $200,000 for the conduct of ball boys, $100,000 for players and officials invading the VAR area and obstructing the referee, and $15,000 for the use of lasers by supporters.

The January 18 final at Stade Mohammed V was marred by protests after a late VAR decision awarded Morocco a penalty, which was saved, before Senegal won 1-0 in extra time through Pape Gueye.

CAF also rejected a protest filed by Morocco against Senegal over alleged regulatory breaches.
