Ajaokuta Steel Plant Revival Takes Center Stage, Says FG

By Daniel Edu

Shuaibu Audu, the Minister of Steel Development, has emphasized the urgency of reviving the Ajaokuta Steel Company, pledging his dedication to the revival efforts. Addressing the press in Abuja on Monday, Audu expressed his commitment to revitalizing the dormant steel plant.

Audu unveiled a comprehensive plan during the briefing, outlining key steps to rejuvenate the steel sector. He revealed his intent to chart a clear development roadmap for the industry, vigorously pursue the completion of the Ajaokuta steel facility, and introduce necessary legislation to regulate the steel sector, among other initiatives.

He remarked, “Our predecessors recognized the significance of steel development but lacked the necessary determination to achieve its goals.”

“The Ajaokuta Steel plant symbolizes steel development, a project initiated over four decades ago. Our aim is to reignite this endeavor and ensure that, within the tenure of this administration, we achieve the production of at least a small steel sheet.”

Audu emphasized the vital role of steel in a nation’s progress, stating that if managed effectively, it could catalyze an industrial revolution.

Over the period of 2016 to 2023, the Nigerian government allocated a substantial sum of over N3 billion annually to cover personnel expenses at the Ajaokuta Steel Company.

Despite consistent budgetary allocations, the steel company has remained inactive for more than 42 years, with the government’s attempts at privatization and concession proving unsuccessful.

Audu highlighted the personal importance of the steel sector to the President, indicating that he was appointed to spearhead the ministry’s agenda due to his familiarity with the President’s vision.

“We refuse to let bureaucratic constraints stifle our innovation; we are focused on achieving tangible outcomes through legitimate means,” he affirmed.

He revealed that a comprehensive roadmap for the sector’s revitalization would be revealed in the coming days.
