The Bayelsa Electricity Company Limited (BEC) is making significant strides in its 60MW gas turbine project, with officials confident of meeting the December 2025 completion deadline.

Engr.Steve Bubagha, Director of operations (BEC) made this known while conducting Newsmen on a tour of the project site at Elebele in Ogbia Local government area of Bayelsa State

The director of operations noted that, the project is approximately 70% complete and will transform the state’s power infrastructure and boost economic development in the State.

“In just a few weeks, we’ve seen major progress,” Bubagha said, pointing to the nearly finished control room, installed pipes, switch gears, and instrumentation valves.

He added that transformer bases are nearing completion, with power transformers slated for installation by the end of June and turbines expected to be ready by August.

Bubagha stressed that the project supports Governor Douye Diri’s mandate to deliver a stable power supply by year-end, ensuring electricity for homes, businesses, and industries across Bayelsa.

The project is part of Governor Douye Diri’s Assured Prosperity Agenda, aimed at improving the welfare and well-being of Bayelsans.

Also speaking, the Technical Adviser to Bayelsa Gov. on Media and Publicity (Print), Wisdom Ikuli , emphasized the significance of the project, saying it will attract businesses, create employment opportunities, and stimulate economic growth in the state.

Ikuli further highlighted the project’s potential to transform Bayelsa’s economy, stating, “The 60MW gas plant project is a game-changer for Bayelsa State. “

He also praised Governor Diri’s vision for the state, citing his commitment to implementing large-scale projects that will drive development in Bayelsa.

Ikuli added that the project aligns with the governor’s agenda to improve the quality of life for Bayelsans.

He explained that the governor has embarked on several other infrastructure projects, including the Nembe-Brass road, Yenagoa Agiama Otuan Oporoma road, Glorydrive, and Imgbi bridge, among others.

The governor’s vision is to make Bayelsa a prosperous state, and this project is a significant step towards achieving that goal,” he said.

Once completed, the 60MW gas plant will improve access to electricity, reducing reliance on solar panels and diesel generators, and enhancing the overall quality of life for Bayelsans.
