Betsy Obaseki Cup: Host team starts on winning note

Edo Queens, the host team of the Betsy Obaseki Women football tournament, started on a winning note following their victory on Sunday against Naija Ratels FC.

The match which commenced immediately after the official opening ceremony for the tournament at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, saw the host team beat their opponent 2 – 1.

The Edo team which played better than their opponent, only managed to score a goal in the first half through Chioma Olisa in the 37th minutes.

On the resumption of play in the second, the host team who were now playing hard to increase the goal tally got the break in the 58th minutes through Glory Osagie, but the tally was reduced through a penalty two minutes later.

Our correspondent reports that earlier in the day, there was a harvest of goals in the two other matches that took place in the tournament.

In the first game, Robo FC defeated their group B opponent, Royal Queens 5-0 while Rivers Angels mauled Fortress Ladies 4-0.

There was, however, a hiccup in the group C match between Kaduna Queens and Sunshine owing to the delay in the arrival of the Kaduna team.

Our correspondent reports that the match was, however, prosponed to a later date.

It would be recalled that the draws for the Betsy Obaseki women football tournament, with the theme, “Promoting the Girl Child”, took placed on Sunday.

The draws had in attendance notable sports personality including the Minister for Youths and Sports, Sunday Dare, former Falvon players, Nkiru Okosieme, and Igunbor Okunwa.

The ceremony was graced by a former Super Eagles player and the Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Sports, Daniel Omokachi, and also the Governor of Edo, Goodwin Obaseki.
