In a heart-wrenching incident on Christmas Day, the joyous atmosphere at Ibeshe Beach in Lagos turned somber when Femi Adegboyega, 26, and his younger sister Ibukun Adegboyega, 23, lost their lives to drowning. The tragedy unfolded around 6:00 pm, casting a shadow over the festive occasion.
The pair, residents of FESTAC Town, were enjoying an evening swim with friends when the unthinkable occurred. Eyewitness Seun, who had been with them moments before the incident, struggled to comprehend the sudden turn of events. “We were swimming together on the beach. I do not understand how it happened because we were together, and all of a sudden, they both drowned,” he lamented, offering condolences to the grieving parents.
Despite the efforts of friends and local divers, the siblings’ bodies have yet to be recovered from the waters of Ibeshe Beach. Femi, another eyewitness, recounted the futile attempts to rescue them. “All efforts by his friends and local divers to rescue them from Ibeshe Beach did not work. We informed the police about it quickly before the situation escalated. I pray their bodies will be found. I pray everything works well,” he said.
Confirming the tragic incident, Benjamin Hundeyin, the state Police Public Relations Officer, revealed that divers have been engaged in the search for the bodies. An ongoing investigation aims to uncover the circumstances surrounding the drowning. The family of the deceased has been notified, adding another layer of sorrow to the holiday season. As the community grapples with the loss, thoughts and prayers pour in for the Adegboyega family.
