Edo Assembly to Issue Shaibu’s Impeachment Notice via Substitution

Must read

The Edo State House Assembly has decided to publish the impeachment notice directed at the state Deputy Governor, Phillip Shaibu, in national newspapers. This action comes in response to Shaibu’s alleged refusal to acknowledge the notice served on him by the House last week.

The impeachment proceedings against Shaibu commenced last Wednesday, with lawmakers accusing him of perjury and leaking government secrets. The issuance of the impeachment notice is perceived as the latest development in the ongoing rift between Shaibu and Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Tensions between the deputy governor and the governor have persisted since last year when Shaibu declared his intention to contest in this year’s governorship race.

During Monday’s plenary session, the Speaker of the Edo State House Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, stated that Shaibu had rejected the impeachment notice served on him by the House. Consequently, the House resolved to serve the notice by substitution, with the Clerk of the House directed to publish the notice in the Nigerian Observer newspaper and other national dailies.

Agbebaku emphasized, “It is clear that the deputy governor has rejected the impeachment notice served on him by the House. The House will serve him by substitution by publishing the letter in three national dailies, The Observer inclusive.”
