Emergency: NSCDC assures on provision of security, shelter for civilians

Calabar, March 2, 2020  The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has assured Nigerians that the corps is committed to the provision of security and shelter for civilians during periods of emergency.

Mr Danjuma Elisah, Commandant of NSCDC in Cross River, gave the assurance on Monday during the celebration of the 2020 International Civil Defence Day held at the command’s headquarters in Calabar.

Elisah said the provision of security and shelter for civilians in the country during periods of emergency was part of the NSCDC humanitarian activities enshrined in the corps Amendment Act 2007.

He highlighted other humanitarian activities to include providing assistance of emergency medical services, including first aid, during any emergency.

He explained that the humanitarian services provided by NSCDC was a re-awakening of its humanity, compassion and service to the public.

According to him, the International Civil Defence Day with the theme ‘Civil Defence and a First Aider in Every Home’, seeks to make conscious of the corps role as stewards of the Nigerian people.

The Commandant said that the theme of the 2020 celebration reminds officers and men of the corps of their duty to the Nigerians.

He told officers of the command that what defines a ‘civil defender’ was the qualities which include empathy, confidence, resilience, physical fitness and innovation among others.

“As civil defenders, we are called to protect lives and properties. The goal of first aid include preserving lives, alleviating suffering and preventing injury among others.

“The Civil Defence Day Celebration 2020, is a reminder of this sacred duty. This day reminds us to be first aiders in our homes.”

Elisah said that the celebration also encouraged them to exhibit the qualities of a first aider in the dispensation of their role.

“While the International Civil Defence Organisation and the High Command of the NSCDC demands more from us, it is not lost on the organisation the efforts and sacrifices of officers and men of NSCDC and the world over protection of lives and property,’’ he said.

The Commandant also used the opportunity of the 2020 celebration day to salute fallen heroes of the corps who lost their lives in the course of duty.

Daybreak reports that there was sensitisation talks on first aid and the dangers of self-medication including the prevention of disease outbreaks.

The highlight of the celebration was a display by the NSCDC Agro-Rangers Squad on their skills in protecting agro-allied investment and resolving farmers/herders conflict in the country.
