EPL: Liverpool’s Isak undergoes surgery for ankle fracture, set for months on sidelines

Liverpool have confirmed that forward Alexander Isak has undergone surgery after suffering a fracture to his left leg.

According to BBC Sport, the club disclosed on Tuesday that the Sweden international successfully underwent an operation on an ankle injury which included a fractured fibula.

While Liverpool did not give a specific timeline for his return, the 26-year-old is expected to be out of action for several months.

Isak sustained the injury during Saturday’s Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur after coming off the bench to score for Arne Slot’s side. He was injured following a challenge from Spurs defender Micky van de Ven shortly after striking the ball for his goal.

The striker was clearly in distress and had to be assisted off the pitch by medical personnel, bringing his involvement in the match to an abrupt end.

The setback is a major blow for Liverpool and the player, who joined the Reds in the summer for a Premier League record fee of £125 million.

Since completing his move from Newcastle in September, Isak has scored three goals in 16 appearances across all competitions.

The injury adds to a challenging period for the forward, who missed Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Asia due to what was described as a minor thigh problem amid speculation over his future. He later trained alone at former club Real Sociedad before sealing his transfer to Liverpool on deadline day.
