A tragic incident overshadowed Sunday night’s Nations League final between Portugal and Spain as a fan died after falling from the second tier of the main stand at Munich’s Allianz Arena.
The supporter reportedly plunged into the lower seating area during extra time, prompting an immediate response from paramedics and stadium stewards. Despite efforts to resuscitate the individual on-site, UEFA later confirmed the fan sadly passed away at 00:06 CET.
In an official statement, UEFA said:
“There was a medical emergency at the Munich arena, and despite the best efforts of the medical team, the person sadly passed away. Our thoughts are with their loved ones at this difficult time.”
The identity of the deceased has not yet been disclosed.
While the match continued during the medical emergency, the somber news cast a shadow over Portugal’s victory. The Portuguese side claimed their second Nations League title after edging Spain in a penalty shootout.
Spain manager Luis de la Fuente opened his post-match remarks with a tribute to the deceased fan:
“I want to express my condolences to the family of the fan who has died. Moments like this remind us of what truly matters.”
Portugal’s Nuno Mendes, who was named Player of the Match, also expressed his sympathies:
“I would like to extend my condolences to the family. It puts our victory today into perspective.”
Authorities have yet to release further details about the incident, and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fall is expected.
