Former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, has applauded President Bola Tinubu for his efforts to stabilise Nigeria’s economy, but also issued a stark warning to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying the party risks becoming irrelevant if urgent reforms are not made.
Fayose made these remarks during a courtesy visit to President Tinubu at his Ikoyi residence in Lagos on Monday night.
Commends Tinubu’s Economic Reforms
The outspoken politician commended the President for taking bold steps to address the country’s economic challenges, noting that while progress may be slow, it is tangible.
“There’s no miracle that can fix things overnight,” Fayose said. “But stabilising a collapsing economy deserves recognition. For the little he’s done so far, we must commend him.”
Fayose clarified that his praise for President Tinubu is not politically motivated, but stems from long-standing respect and belief in his leadership.
“I supported the President not because of politics, but because I believe in his capacity. I criticised the last administration heavily, but this is different.”
No Plans to Defect to APC
Despite his public commendation of the President, Fayose firmly ruled out any possibility of defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“Let me be very clear: Ayodele Fayose is not leaving the PDP. I’m 65 this year. At this point in my life, defection is not on the table. I can only speak for myself, but I remain with my party.”
PDP in Crisis
Fayose didn’t shy away from critiquing his own party, warning that the PDP is in deep trouble.
“Truthfully, the PDP is in serious danger. If the leadership doesn’t act fast and decisively, the party will become a political carcass. That’s just the honest truth.”
While noting that he no longer holds an active political office, Fayose said he continues to play a supportive role within the PDP and won’t stop speaking out.
“I’m not a sitting governor anymore, but I’ve done my part for the PDP. Today, I offer support from the sidelines—and I won’t stop telling the truth.”
Applauds Ekiti Governor
Fayose also commended Ekiti State Governor Abiodun Oyebanji, calling his performance “exceptional” and deserving of support across party lines.
“In Ekiti, party affiliation shouldn’t come before the state’s progress. We all want the governor to succeed, regardless of political differences.”
He added that President Tinubu reaffirmed his backing for Governor Oyebanji during their meeting, a gesture Fayose described as reassuring amid political speculations.
Fayose’s comments have sparked renewed discussion about the future of the PDP, Tinubu’s leadership style, and the possibility of realignment in Nigeria’s political landscape.
