FCTA Plans Integrity Tests on Older Buildings to Prevent Collapse

By  Milcah   Tanimu

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has announced its intention to conduct comprehensive integrity tests on older buildings in the city in a proactive measure to prevent potential building collapses. Mr. Mukhtar Galadima, the Director of Development Control at FCTA, made this announcement during a press briefing in Abuja. This move follows the recent incident in Jabi where a two-storey building collapsed, resulting in fatalities and injuries.

Galadima outlined that the integrity tests would be undertaken in collaboration with professional and regulatory bodies, encompassing areas like Wuse 1, Garki 1, Garki 2, and Asokoro. The primary focus would be on structures that are over 30 years old, with the aim of identifying potential structural defects that might lead to catastrophic failures.

The decision to conduct these tests was triggered by the unfortunate incident in Garki village, where a building collapse resulted in loss of life and numerous injuries. Galadima noted that due to the passage of time and the departure of many of the original overseeing officers, the level of supervision for many of these older buildings remains uncertain. The integrity tests aim to ensure that these structures can withstand the test of time and meet modern safety standards.

Galadima clarified that not every building that fails the integrity test would automatically be demolished. In some cases, consultants might suggest remedial actions that could make the building safe. However, structures that are deemed beyond repair will be subject to removal.

The announcement about these integrity tests comes after an incident on Plot 643 Cadastral Zone Bo4, Jabi District, where a failed test revealed the potential for a building collapse. Despite being served with a vacation notice, the occupants of the building refused to comply. Galadima expressed concern over their reluctance to heed professional advice and stated that safety should always be a top priority.

In light of the situation, FCTA will consult its legal secretariat regarding the court order obtained by the occupants. The administration stressed the importance of adhering to building regulations and urged the public to cooperate with safety assessments and directives, emphasizing that the goal is to prevent disasters that could endanger lives and property.
