Federal Government Sets Bold Timelines for Completion of Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Dual Carriageway

By Jabiru Hassan, Kano

The Honourable Minister of Works, Engr. Nweze David Umahi, CON, FNSE, FNATE, has announced that the Federal Government, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has set a 14-month timeline for the completion of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano dual carriageway rehabilitation project.

Speaking during an inspection visit to the project site on Wednesday, January 16, 2025, Engr. Umahi emphasized the critical role the project plays in improving Nigeria’s infrastructure and enhancing connectivity across the northern region.

Accompanied by the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammad Idris, as well as the Chairmen of the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Works, Senator Barinada Mpigi and Hon. Akin Alabi, respectively, the Minister assured Nigerians of the government’s commitment to delivering the project on schedule.

He disclosed that the initial contractor, Messrs Julius Berger (Nig.) Ltd., had its contract revoked due to irreconcilable differences, including a proposed timeline extension of three years, which the government deemed unacceptable. The project has now been divided into three segments to expedite completion while maintaining high standards.

“We are determined to complete this road within 14 months. This road will be built to last between 50 to 100 years, ensuring it becomes a lasting legacy for Nigeria. Palliative works are already being carried out on failed sections of the road, particularly from Abuja to Kaduna, to achieve zero potholes while the contract is being re-awarded,” Engr. Umahi stated.

The Minister added that the project includes a 10-kilometer extension at the Kano end and a 5-kilometer extension at the Abuja end to ensure seamless connectivity without failed alignments.

He further stressed that delays or hindrances would not be tolerated, as all stakeholders are aligned with the goal of delivering a world-class highway. The Minister urged all involved to set aside political considerations and focus solely on completing the project for the benefit of Nigerians.

“The Renewed Hope Administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to ending the suffering of road users along this alignment. The President has directed us to ensure timely completion, and we are committed to fulfilling this mandate,” he added.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammad Idris, noted that periodic inspections would be conducted to monitor progress and provide updates to citizens. He expressed confidence in the expertise of the project team and reiterated the administration’s dedication to improving infrastructure across the country.

“This project will significantly enhance transportation, trade, and economic activity in Nigeria, and we are determined to make it a success,” Alhaji Idris said.

The Chairmen of the Senate and House Committees on Works also pledged their support for the project, ensuring adequate budgetary provisions and robust oversight functions to facilitate timely delivery.
