Nollywood actor Femi Adebayo won the Best Actor in a Supporting Role award for his performance in the historical thriller “Jagun Jagun” at the 20th Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) held on Saturday in Lagos. This film garnered seven nominations and also secured the Achievement Award for Visual Effects and Make-Up.
During the ceremony, Dr. Raymond Anyiam-Osigwe, CEO of AMAA, expressed gratitude to the team behind the event and acknowledged the contributions from Lagos, Bayelsa states, and international attendees from the U.S.
In addition to Adebayo’s win, other notable awards went to Elsie Abang for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in “KIPKEMBOI” and Michell Lemuya, who received the Best Young Promising Actor award for “NAWI.” Zolisa Xaluva won the Best Actor in a Leading Role award for “The Queenstown King,” while Jackie Appiah received the Best Actress in a Leading Role award for “Red Carpet.”
Harry Bentil directed the Best Feature Film, “Letters to Goddo,” and Jahmil X.T Qubeka won the Best Director award for “The Queenstown Kings.” AMAA honored Souleymane Cissé from Mali, Nacer Khemir from Tunisia, and Haile Gerima from Ethiopia with lifetime achievement awards. Additionally, Alain Gomis and Tsitsi Dangarembga received special recognition.
The ceremony named “The Weekend” as Best Film, and it also won awards for Screenplay, Cinematography, and Best Nigerian Film. Other notable winners included “Out of Bound” for Production, “Boda Love” for Soundtrack, and “Queenstown King” for Sound.
Dr. Anyiam-Osigwe emphasized the significance of AMAA, stating, “AMAA is not just celebrating the winners but celebrating excellence and richness of our African history. As we enter a new chapter in AMAA’s second decade, we continue to showcase the story of Africa on the global stage.”
