FG Announces Nationwide Football Tournament for Inmates

By  Milcah   Tanimu

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has announced that the federal government will launch a football tournament for inmates across the country’s correctional centers. This initiative, a part of the Nigeria Correctional Service’s (NCS) rehabilitation programs, aligns with the ministry’s broader plan to support inmate rehabilitation.

Tunji-Ojo highlighted the transformative power of sports, stating, “Sport, as a form of recreation, remains a unifier capable of bridging gaps and transforming people across the globe.”

The announcement came after a meeting with the management of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Tuesday. The meeting, held in the Minister’s Conference office in Abuja and led by NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, focused on exploring strategic partnerships to use football as a tool for inmate education and rehabilitation. The sport’s unique potential to inspire confidence, foster personal growth, build skills, and promote positive transformation was emphasized.

Tunji-Ojo emphasized the administration’s commitment under President Bola Tinubu to foster collaboration between the NFF and the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS). He noted that this partnership aligns with the government’s vision to enhance the rehabilitation of inmates across all correctional centers, aiming to create a more inclusive and supportive society.

Key figures present at the meeting included NFF Deputy Secretary General Dr. Emmanuel Ipkeme, NFF Director of Legal Okey Obi, NFF Director of Communications Ademola Olajire, Director of Competition Ruth David, Assistant Director of Protocol Emmanuel Adesanya, and former Super Eagles football star and coach Augustine Eguavoen.

As of the time of this report, more details about the football tournament are yet to be released by the NFF, and the football governing body in Nigeria has not issued an official statement on the new initiative.
