Former Minister Plans Robotics and AI Institute in Nigeria

By   Milcah   Tanimu

Professor Bart Nnaji, a former Minister of Science and Technology and Chairman of the Geometric Power Group, has revealed plans to establish Nigeria’s first institute for robotics and artificial intelligence. He announced this development during a lecture marking the 100th anniversary of Bigard Memorial Seminary in Enugu.

The institute, approved by the federal government in 2021 after a four-year review, will focus on teaching computer sciences, robotics, and intelligent machine technology. It will also conduct advanced research on algorithms for autonomous tasks and issue certifications in AI and robotics design.

Nnaji highlighted the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education, urging the Nigerian government to prioritize these subjects to drive technological advancement. Citing Vietnam’s success in producing 90,000 STEM graduates annually, he emphasized the need for Nigeria to follow suit to support global tech demands.

A seasoned academic and innovator, Nnaji completed his postdoctoral fellowship at MIT in AI and led robotics research at major U.S. universities. While specific details on the institute’s location and start date remain undisclosed, his initiative promises to position Nigeria as a leader in AI and robotics innovation.
