The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has urged drivers and other road users to be disciplined on the road and avoid being part of sad, gory tale that families of accident victims have to tell.

The Akwa Ibom Sector Commander, Mr Sunday Oghenekaro, gave the advice during the flag off ceremony of the 2018 Commemoration of African Road Safety Day/World Day of Remembrance of Road Traffic Victims in Uyo on Tuesday.

Oghenekaro said that crash prevention and loss reduction on all public roads in the country required full cooperation and collaboration of all critical stakeholders.

FRSC being the lead agency in road safety and traffic management in the country and Africa joined others to commence action in commiserating with families of road crashes across the country.

According to him, the ceremony would also show sympathy with those that lost their love ones and draw attention of the living on the consequences of failure to ensure discipline while using the road with others.

“I do implore all of us as road users to imbibe discipline and work in concert with the FRSC to fulfill its mandate of keeping death off our road by being cautious when using the road.

“By putting in remembrances, that our love ones are ever patient eagerly waiting to receive us safely back home after every trip.

“We must embrace discipline and commit ourselves to the cause of crash prevention and loss reduction on the road ways by ensuring discipline through courtesy to other road users and obedience to traffic rules and regulations,” Oghenekaro said.

The sector commander urged road users especially drivers to think safety and act safely as the yuletide season draws near.

He urged drivers to ensure that they keep their vehicles in road worthy condition, use good quality tyres, avoid overloading, night trips, use of alcohol and excessive speed, stressing that speed kills.

The theme of this year’s commemoration is; “Road Have Stories.”
