Governor Yusuf Named Nigeria’s Most Labour-Friendly Leader by National Labour Institute

By Jabiru Hassan, Kano

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has been recognized as Nigeria’s most labour-friendly governor by the Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies (MINILS).

This announcement was made in a statement issued on Tuesday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa. In a letter of appreciation, Dr. Raji Michael, representing the Director General and Chief Executive of MINILS, commended Governor Yusuf for his dedication to empowering trade unions and fostering constructive labour relations in the state.

The letter, shared by Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, highlighted a notable initiative by Governor Yusuf, who organized a capacity-building workshop for leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Kano State. The workshop, titled “Conflict Management for Harmonious Industrial Labour Relations Environment,” took place from September 11-13, 2024. Its aim was to equip union executives with practical conflict resolution strategies, enhancing workplace harmony and productivity.

“Your Excellency, on behalf of the Honourable Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Barr. Nkiru Onyejeocho, we express our gratitude for your dedication to advancing workers’ education and fostering vibrant, responsive trade unions in Kano,” stated Dr. Michael in the letter.

Dr. Michael further noted that workshop participants returned with renewed determination and were well-prepared to apply the conflict management skills they had acquired. He also expressed the institute’s interest in further collaboration with the Kano State Government to promote labour education and development initiatives.

In another move underscoring his commitment to workers’ welfare, Governor Yusuf recently approved an increase in the minimum wage to N71,000 for Kano State civil servants, exceeding the federal recommendation of N70,000.
