Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has pledged to pay long-standing entitlements owed to former councillors in the state, some of which have been outstanding since 2014.
In a statement released on Tuesday by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Governor Yusuf announced this commitment during an event where former All Progressives Congress (APC) councillors formally joined the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) through the Maslaha Forum for Kano State Councillors, Supervisors, and Advisors.
Governor Yusuf commended the councillors’ decision to switch allegiance, linking it to their dissatisfaction with the previous administration’s failure to pay their entitlements. “Their decision is justified,” Yusuf said, adding, “I assure them that their entitlements will soon be paid.” He shared that a dedicated committee has been established to manage the payment process, mirroring the approach taken with pensioners.
The governor also instructed the newly appointed chairpersons of Kano’s 44 local governments to identify any former councillors who have yet to receive their benefits.
Expressing gratitude for the councillors’ support, Yusuf highlighted the NNPP’s focus on the welfare of the people, contrasting it with the previous administration’s reported indifference to the councillors’ concerns.
Hon. Sunusi Kata Madobi, chairman of the Maslaha Forum, stated that many former councillors, who served between 2015 and 2023, joined the NNPP in response to Governor Yusuf’s commitment to their welfare. Madobi noted that these councillors had made repeated requests for their entitlements, which went ignored by the former government.
