Gyang Dung Gyang, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aspirant for the Jos South/Jos East Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives, has condemned the killing of artisanal miners in Kuru District, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, and called for urgent security intervention.According to community sources, the attack occurred in the early hours of Thursday at a mining site in Kuru, where gunmen reportedly opened fire on miners. At least seven people were killed, while others sustained injuries and some were reported missing.
The Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM) identified the victims as Dung Gyang (19), Weng Dung (26), Francis Paul (23), Samuel Peter (22), Dung Simon (28), Pam Dung (23), and Francis Markus (15).In a statement issued in Jos, Gyang described the incident as a reminder of ongoing security challenges in the area. He expressed condolences to the bereaved families, the Berom community, and residents of Jos South, noting the economic impact of the loss of young people engaged in artisanal mining.He urged security agencies and relevant authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
He also called for improved security around mining sites and vulnerable communities to prevent similar attacks.Gyang further appealed to political leaders across party lines to work together to address insecurity in Plateau State, stressing that sustainable development depends on a safe and secure environment.
