Humanitarian ministry advocates for mines, explosives free environment

Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development has advocated for a Nigerian environment free of mines and other explosives that is injurious to the lives and property of Nigerians.

The Minister of the humanitarian parastatal Hajiya Sadiyà Umar Farouq made this call today as Nigeria marks
the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action.
In a press release made available to Daybreak from the ministry, Farouq commended the efforts of the UNMAS in Nigeria the Nigerian Armed Forces and the North East Development Commission towards creating aware in and mitigating the risks of mines, unexploded ordnance and explosive remnants in conflict affected communities.

The release read, ” As part of the Ministry’s efforts to raise mine awareness, the North East Development Commission NEDC in collaboration with a local partner Makesafe Humanitarian Safety and Demining Services is currently organizing a series of mine risk awareness training for communities in the BAY States (Borno, Adamawa and Yobe).

On this International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, we aim for an environment free of mines and other UXOs where our people can live and work in a safe environment conducive to development and where the people are fully sensitized about mine risks and needs of victims are met.
