Ibom Air Implements NCAA Directive on Power Banks, Reaffirms Passenger Safety

Ibom Air says it has adopted the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) directive restricting the placement of power banks on commercial flights, reaffirming its commitment to passenger and crew safety. In a statement issued in Uyo by the airline’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Aniekan Essienette, the carrier said it is complying fully with the updated safety guidelines.

Ynder the NCAA directive, passengers are prohibited from placing power banks in overhead luggage bins during flights. Instead, the devices must be carried in cabin baggage and stored in the seat pocket, under the seat in front, or in a carry-on bag that remains easily accessible.

The airline also reiterated that power banks remain prohibited in checked baggage, in line with existing regulations on lithium battery devices.

According to the NCAA, power banks with a capacity of up to 100 watt-hours (Wh) are permitted without restriction. Devices rated between 100Wh and 160Wh require prior airline approval, while those exceeding 160Wh are banned from aircraft.

The directive aligns with global aviation safety standards and follows reported international incidents involving lithium-ion battery overheating, known as “thermal runaway,” which can pose fire risks in flight.

Ibom Air said it will continue to work closely with regulatory authorities to ensure full compliance with all safety requirement.
