Ifeanyi Matthew’s Football Journey from Nigeria to Europe and His Love for Nigerian Cuisine

By Daniel Edu

In a recent interview with Super Eagles B and FC Zurich midfielder, Ifeanyi Matthew, the talented footballer shares his remarkable journey from playing in the Nigerian domestic league to making a name for himself in Europe. He also discusses the challenges he faced, his role models, and his love for Nigerian cuisine. Here are the highlights of the interview:

**Early Football Career:** Ifeanyi Matthew started playing football at a young age in Nigeria, representing clubs like FC Hearts, El-Kanemi Warriors, and Kano Pillars. His dream of playing at the highest level began to materialize when he joined Norwegian first division club Lillestrom SK in 2016, where he helped the team win the Norwegian Cup in 2017.

**Experience in Turkey:** After his stint in Norway, Ifeanyi Matthew moved to Turkey’s Osmanlispor FK (now Ankaraspor) but decided to return to Norway as he didn’t enjoy his football experience in Turkey.

**Impressive Goal Record:** As a central midfielder, Ifeanyi Matthew boasts an impressive goal record in Norway, with 20 goals and 18 assists in 196 competitive games. He attributes his success to playing under a coach who allowed him the freedom to express himself and join the team in attack.

**Role Model:** Ifeanyi Matthew looks up to former Ivorian international Yaya Toure as his role model. He admired Toure’s playing style and tried to incorporate elements of it into his own game.

**Comparison of European Football and NPFL:** Ifeanyi Matthew highlights the significant differences between playing in Europe and the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL). He notes that European leagues offer better facilities, are more attractive, and provide greater financial incentives. He believes that Nigeria’s domestic league needs significant improvements in infrastructure, officiating, and other areas to compete globally.

**National Team Experience:** Ifeanyi Matthew has represented Nigeria in various national teams, including the Flying Eagles, U-20 World Cup squad, and the home-based Super Eagles under coach Sunday Oliseh. He considers playing for the national team as one of the best moments of his career.

**Aspirations with the Super Eagles:** Although he hasn’t been called up to the Super Eagles since Oliseh’s tenure, Ifeanyi Matthew believes he can contribute to the national team’s success with his experience, versatility, and ability to create chances and score goals from midfield.

**Dealing with Challenges:** When he first arrived in Europe, Ifeanyi Matthew faced challenges adapting to the weather and food. He missed Nigerian staples like garri and egusi soup but eventually found sources for Nigerian cuisine. He also shared an experience of being bullied but stood his ground as a “Naija boy” and earned respect.

**Family and Support:** Ifeanyi Matthew’s family has been supportive of his football career from an early age, recognizing his talent and passion. He also credits his wife as a significant source of inspiration and support throughout his journey.

Ifeanyi Matthew’s story reflects the determination and resilience of Nigerian talents making their mark in the global football arena, and his love for Nigerian food and culture remains a strong part of his identity.
