Injury Blow for Spain’s Gavi in Euro Qualifying Match

By Milcah Tanimu

In a Euro qualifying match against Georgia, Spain’s young talent, Gavi, suffered a significant knee injury, as confirmed by a medical examination conducted on Monday. The tests revealed a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, along with an associated injury to the lateral meniscus. Gavi will undergo surgery in the coming days, with further updates on his condition to be provided post-surgery.

The injury occurred during the final game of Spain’s European Championship qualifying group, forcing Gavi off the field after just 26 minutes of play. The Barcelona midfielder had been a key player this season, making 15 appearances for Barça, 13 of which were in the starting XI. Gavi contributed with a goal in the league against Villarreal and another in the Champions League against Royal Antwerp, in addition to providing one assist.

Since making his first-team debut at the age of 17 in August 2021 against Getafe, Gavi has amassed 111 appearances, with 89 starts, scoring seven goals, and providing 12 assists. His achievements include winning the league title in the 2022/23 season and the Spanish Super Cup in the same campaign. Gavi was also honored with the Golden Boy award in 2022.

Known for his spirit and determination on the field, Gavi’s injury comes as a significant setback for both Barcelona and its fans. Supporters are encouraged to send messages of support to the midfielder as he faces this challenging period of recovery.
