Israel-Iran Conflict: FG to Evacuate Nigerians from War Zones

The Federal Government has announced plans to evacuate Nigerian citizens currently stranded in Israel and Iran as the conflict between the two countries intensifies into its sixth day.

In a statement issued Wednesday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government said preparations for evacuation are nearing completion, with operations set to commence shortly.

“All affected Nigerian citizens are strongly advised to observe all necessary security protocols and promptly contact the nearest Nigerian Embassy or Mission for registration and further instructions,” the ministry stated.

The government reiterated its call for immediate de-escalation of hostilities and urged both Israel and Iran to prioritize diplomatic dialogue and the protection of civilian lives.

It also commended the Nigerian embassies in Tel Aviv and Tehran for their swift response and continuous efforts to locate and assist Nigerians caught in the crossfire.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria remains fully committed to the safety and welfare of its citizens, both at home and abroad,” the ministry emphasized.

The ministry added that it is working closely with international partners and local authorities in both countries to ensure a secure and timely evacuation process for Nigerians in affected areas.

Background to the Conflict

Tensions between Israel and Iran escalated dramatically last Friday following an Israeli military airstrike on Iranian territory. Israel described the attack as a preemptive strike aimed at halting Iran’s alleged nuclear weapons development.

In response, Iran has withdrawn from nuclear negotiations with the United States. Though Tehran has signaled readiness to resume talks, U.S. President Donald Trump has adopted a hardline stance, demanding what he called an “unconditional surrender” from Iran.

On Saturday, June 14, the Federal Government of Nigeria issued a public appeal for an immediate ceasefire between the two nations. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, expressed deep concern over the rising violence marked by sustained missile and aerial exchanges.

He called on the international community, especially the United Nations Security Council, to take urgent steps to de-escalate the conflict and encourage constructive dialogue between the warring nations.

Economic Implications

Analysts have warned that the ongoing conflict could have ripple effects on Nigeria’s economy, particularly in the energy sector. The renewed Middle East tensions may trigger a surge in global oil prices, with potential consequences for domestic fuel costs and supply chains.

As the situation unfolds, Nigerians in the conflict zones are urged to remain calm, vigilant, and stay in close contact with embassy officials for real-time updates and evacuation instructions.
