Kaduna new transport system’ ll modernize public transportation, decongest city roads – DG

By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

The Kaduna State Government has unveiled plans to introduce a modern transport system aimed at improving public transit, easing road congestion, and enhancing the overall quality of life for residents.

The Kaduna Bus Rapid Transit (KBRT) Project, a key initiative of Governor Uba Sani’s administration, will feature a 24-kilometer dedicated transit corridor from Kawo Bridge to Sabon Tasha, with strategically placed bus stations and shelters along the route.

Speaking at a media briefing on Friday, the Director General of the Kaduna State Transport Regulatory Authority (KADSTRA), Engr. Inuwa Ibrahim, described the project as a milestone in the transformation of Kaduna’s transport system.

He noted that Kaduna has faced transportation challenges for years, including congestion, unregulated commercial transport operations, and inefficiencies that hinder mobility. The KBRT Project was conceived to bring order, safety, and reliability to public transit, marking a shift toward a modern, efficient, and environmentally friendly system.

Engr. Ibrahim highlighted Governor Uba Sani’s decisive intervention, which revived the project after years of delays. In 2023, Governor Sani allocated ₦97 million as counterpart funding to jumpstart implementation. This was followed by a ₦699 million allocation in the 2024 budget and a further ₦30 billion provision in the 2025 budget, with ₦5 billion earmarked as additional counterpart funding. He emphasized that these financial commitments reflect the Governor’s vision for a modern, inclusive, and economically vibrant Kaduna.

The KBRT Project is being implemented in partnership with the French Development Agency (AFD), a global supporter of sustainable urban growth and climate-friendly transport systems. Engr. Ibrahim assured that residents can expect to see visible progress soon, with the construction of transit corridors and the installation of necessary infrastructure.

With strong government backing and international collaboration, the Kaduna Bus Rapid Transit (KBRT) Project is set to redefine public transportation in Kaduna State, creating a more efficient and sustainable urban mobility system.
