Kelechi Iheanacho Commits to Staying at Leicester City and Aims for Promotion

By Daniel Edu

Nigerian forward Kelechi Iheanacho has made it clear that he has no intentions of leaving Leicester City, even though the club currently competes in the second tier of English football.

Iheanacho, who began his English football career in 2015 with Manchester City, expressed his contentment with his current club, Leicester City. Following Leicester City’s relegation last season, it was widely expected that the 26-year-old Nigerian forward would seek a move away from the club.

With just one season left on his current contract with the Championship side, Iheanacho has reportedly garnered interest from Everton, Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest, and Inter Milan ahead of the January transfer window.

However, Iheanacho has made it clear that he is committed to remaining at Leicester City and helping them secure promotion to the Premier League next summer.

In an interview with BBC Radio Leicester’s When You’re Smiling Podcast, Iheanacho stated, “These discussions are always difficult when you have less time left at the football club, probably a year or two. I know the speculation, the reports, or the ‘you want to stay, you want to leave,’ I know that.”

“Personally, I love Leicester City. It is a good place, a good football club. I’ve been here for a few years now, and we went down, it’s not ideal, but we’re here now, fighting our way up.”

He continued, “I’m here, concentrating on my football with Leicester City. Hopefully, we can get back up, and everyone will be happy. I didn’t get to move; I’m here now playing for Leicester City, so we concentrate on that now.”

“Hopefully, all the players that didn’t get to move as well will all contribute to the team for us to get up there, which is the most important thing now. Everyone has to make their choice, but we now concentrate on the team and try to help the team and stay together to get up there.”

Kelechi Iheanacho made the move from Manchester City to Leicester City in 2017 for a transfer fee of £25 million and played a pivotal role in the club winning the FA Cup in 2021.

With 57 goals in 215 appearances for Leicester, including his first in the Championship in a recent 2-0 victory over Norwich, Iheanacho remains a valuable asset. In the current season, he has made nine appearances, scoring two goals and providing two assists.
