Lookman Downplays Performance Despite Key Role in Atalanta’s UEFA Victory

By  Milcah   Tanimu

Ademola Lookman has downplayed his performance for Atalanta following their 3-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk in the UEFA Champions League on October 2, 2024. This win marks Atalanta’s first success in the competition this season, achieved at Arena AufSchalke.

The Super Eagles forward contributed significantly by scoring one goal and providing an assist. He assisted Berat Djimsiti for the opening goal and netted a goal himself before halftime. Additionally, Lookman created two chances and struck the crossbar, earning the Player of the Match title from UEFA’s Technical Observer Panel.

Despite these contributions, Lookman expressed humility in his post-match interview. He stated, “It wasn’t my best performance, but tonight it was essential to take the three points after the 0-0 draw with Arsenal.” He acknowledged the team’s collective effort, noting, “In Europe, we have a plus; we are on another level. It was an excellent team performance, seasoned with personal happiness for the goal.”

Looking ahead, Lookman remarked on the league’s challenges, saying, “We had some dips, but we are growing and becoming stronger. Every challenge is important, and we want to do our best in both competitions because Serie A is like the Champions League.”

Atalanta’s joint-top scorers, Duván Zapata and Josip Iličić, have seven goals each in the competition. As Lookman aims to equal or surpass their record before leaving the club, he currently has one goal. With upcoming matches against Celtic, Young Boys, VfB Stuttgart, Real Madrid, SK Sturm Graz, and Barcelona, he has ample opportunity to increase his tally and secure his place in Atalanta’s history.
