Major Blaze Engulfs Calabar Market: Multi-Million Naira Losses Reported

By Daniel Edu

In the early hours of Thursday morning, a devastating fire broke out at Watt, a renowned market in Calabar, Cross River, resulting in the destruction of goods estimated to be worth millions of naira. The blaze, which started around 2 am, ravaged at least six shops within the shopping complex.

Mrs. Olumayowa Olomola, the Commanding Officer of Calabar Command, Federal Fire Service, confirmed the incident, attributing the fire to a power surge in one of the shopping malls. While the exact value of the goods lost remains unknown, Olomola stated that the affected shops were well-stocked.

She praised the swift response of her team, emphasizing that their timely intervention prevented the fire from spreading to more shops within the market. Olomola used the opportunity to urge the public to adopt preventive measures, emphasizing the importance of turning off appliances to avert similar incidents in the future.
