Meet the World’s Youngest King: Nigeria’s Monarch Crowned at Age 2

lIn 1979, history was made in Nigeria when Benjamin Ikenchukwu Keagborekuzi I was crowned the Dein of Agbor Kingdom in Delta State at just two years old. This remarkable event earned him a place in the 1980 Guinness Book of World Records as the youngest monarch in the world.

Born in 1977 into the prestigious Keagborekuzi royal family, young Benjamin ascended the throne following the sudden passing of his father, King James Obika Ikenchukwu, the previous ruler of Agbor Kingdom. Despite his tender age, the kingdom upheld its deep-rooted tradition of hereditary succession, trusting the royal family and elders to guide him until he came of age to rule.

A Childhood in Exile

Due to political instability and security concerns at the time, the young king was swiftly taken abroad for safety. He spent the next 25 years overseas, receiving a western education while broadening his understanding of leadership, governance, and diplomacy.

Though he was absent from his kingdom, his title remained intact. However, when he finally returned to Nigeria at the age of 27, he faced the challenge of reconnecting with a kingdom where an entire generation had grown up without ever seeing their king. Speaking on this transition, he once said:

“We are still dealing with the effects of my long stay abroad because many people no longer understand what it means to serve a king.”

A Monarch with Global Influence

Despite the challenges, King Keagborekuzi I has emerged as one of Nigeria’s most respected traditional rulers, blending tradition with modern leadership. His influence extends beyond the borders of Nigeria:

  • In 2006, at just 28 years old, he was appointed Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, making him the youngest chancellor of any university in Africa.
  • In 2015, he became the Chancellor of West African Union University in Benin Republic.
  • At 26, he was honored with the Officer of the Order of the Belgium Crown, a prestigious international recognition.

As the 18th Dein of Agbor, he envisions a modernized kingdom, once stating that Agbor has the potential to develop into a city as advanced as Dubai—if provided with the right support and infrastructure.

A Private Yet Impactful Life

HRM Benjamin Ikenchukwu Keagborekuzi I is known for keeping his personal life private, avoiding public controversy. However, in a rare interview, he revealed that he is happily married to a strong and beautiful woman whom he met while attending an event in the United States. Reflecting on their unique connection, he said:

“Only God knows how, in a country as big as the U.S., I was able to find an Agbor woman. It was very strange, but I thank God for it.”

A King Who Speaks and is Heard

When asked about the most rewarding aspect of being a monarch, he responded:

“The most interesting part for me is the opportunity to make a change. As an ordinary Nigerian, nobody would listen to you. But because of my position, I have the opportunity to talk, and people listen.”

Widely regarded as a first-class king, HRM Benjamin Ikenchukwu Keagborekuzi I continues to lead with wisdom, dignity, and a modern vision, earning him admiration both within Nigeria and internationally.
