Naira abuse: Policeman in viral video with Okoya’s sons detained for misconduct

The Nigeria Police Force has detained an unidentified officer seen in a viral video with Wahab and Raheem Okoya, sons of billionaire businessman Chief Razaq Okoya, engaging in the abuse of the naira.

Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the officer’s detention in a statement posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday.

Adejobi described the officer’s behavior in the video as unethical and a violation of the police force’s core values, adding that disciplinary action is underway.

“The policeman captured in the recent viral video shared by the sons of Lagos businessman, Chief Okoya, where they were abusing the naira, has been identified and detained for disciplinary action,” Adejobi stated.

“The involvement of the policeman has been condemned, as it is unethical. We will always strive to uphold the sanctity, credibility, and core values of the police. Thank you.”

The viral video, which surfaced last week, sparked widespread criticism. Many Nigerians expressed skepticism that any action would be taken against the Okoya sons due to their father’s influence.

In the video, Wahab and Raheem Okoya are seen wearing white agbada outfits while flaunting bundles of new ₦1,000 notes to promote Raheem’s new song, *“Credit Alert.”* A police officer was also captured holding stacks of ₦1,000 notes as the brothers danced and sprayed cash into the air.

The incident has intensified public calls for stricter enforcement of laws against the abuse of the naira and accountability for those involved, regardless of social status.
