Nasarawa: Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital (DASH) Hires 28 Medical Doctors Amidst Global Migration Trends

By Leo Zwànke, Lafia

In response to the escalating shortage of healthcare professionals exacerbated by global migration trends, Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital (DASH) in Lafia has welcomed a cohort of 28 newly appointed medical doctors.

Dr. Ikrama Hassan, the Chief Medical Director, in a statement signed and made available to newsmen on Monday, emphasized the hospital’s commitment to filling vacancies left by professionals seeking opportunities abroad.

“The recent influx of doctors aims to address gaps left by those who have departed for international prospects,” stated Dr. Ikrama in the press release. He acknowledged the challenges posed by the brain drain phenomenon, which have intensified in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Ikrama highlighted the dual challenges faced by healthcare in Nigeria, where professionals often migrate either internationally or to federal institutions, creating significant voids in local healthcare delivery. Despite these hurdles, he expressed optimism about tackling the personnel shortage head-on.

“The governor of Nasarawa State has prioritized healthcare, enabling DASH to swiftly replace departing staff,” Dr. Ikrama affirmed, emphasizing the strategic importance of the new appointments. “The addition of 28 doctors is a crucial step towards bolstering our capacity to meet community healthcare needs.”

The new medical personnel are expected to enhance DASH’s capabilities across various specialties, thereby improving service delivery and patient outcomes. “These doctors bring diverse skills and experiences that will enrich our healthcare services,” remarked Dr. Ikrama.

The CMD added that the hospital still expects more doctors, as those employed may not be sufficient considering the daily influx of patients requiring attention.

Looking ahead, Dr. Ikrama stressed the significance of governmental support in mitigating healthcare workforce challenges. “The proactive measures taken by Nasarawa State demonstrate a commitment to addressing healthcare gaps,” he stated, reflecting on broader impacts beyond immediate staffing needs.

Confident in DASH’s ability to overcome current staffing challenges, Dr. Ikrama concluded, “With these new appointments, we are poised to maintain high standards of healthcare provision and continue serving our community effectively.”
