Nigerians to experience more days of excessive heat — NiMET

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) has cautioned that the ongoing excessive heat in the country is expected to persist for an extended period.

In its weather and climate update shared on its official platform on Wednesday, NiMET outlined the implications of the prevailing weather conditions and offered advice to the public on coping strategies.

“Air temperatures have soared to 41°C in the North and 39°C in the South, with model projections indicating a continuation of high temperatures in the days ahead,” NiMET stated.

The agency highlighted potential health risks associated with the heat, including dehydration, heat-related illnesses, respiratory issues, and increased susceptibility to chronic conditions.

To mitigate these risks, NiMET issued advisories recommending adequate fluid intake, seeking shade, using fans, and wearing light, breathable clothing to minimize exposure to high temperatures. Additionally, they advised against engaging in strenuous physical activity during peak heat hours, suggesting staying indoors as much as possible between 12:00 noon and 4:00 pm.

As Nigerians brace themselves for more scorching days ahead, NiMET’s guidance aims to help individuals safeguard their health and well-being amidst the persistent heatwave.
