At about 07:00 hours on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, a tanker loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) slid and fell while manoeuvring onto the road. The incident occurred at Dan Marna Filling Station, Gagi, Sokoto South LGA.
Public Relations Officer of the Command, DSC Muhammad Zayyanu said the truck, carrying 45,000 litres of PMS, unfortunately tipped sideways, which caused leaks from the damaged tank and spilt its contents onto the ground. This posed a serious threat to residents, as well as lives and properties within the vicinity.
A well-coordinated emergency response was swiftly initiated by the corps. The area was cordoned off by the NSCDC and other security operatives. These collective efforts ensured the safety of lives and properties and prevented any potential explosion or fire outbreak. Security operatives also acted swiftly to prevent unauthorized individuals from attempting to scoop the spilt fuel, which could have led to a dangerous situation.
Speaking to reporters at the scene, Sokoto State NSCDC Commandant, UI Alfadarai, represented by his Deputy Commandant DCC Florence Awosan, PhD, assured the public that the Corps had deployed adequate personnel to restrict access to the felled tanker. He further stated that the NSCDC was working closely with all first responders on the scene to ensure the situation remained under control.
He thanked the members of the public for their understanding and cooperation. He called on them to always be law abiding and conduct themselves in an orderly manner.
The NSCDC also maintained tight security around the accident site to protect residents and prevent any secondary incidents.
Thanks to a well-coordinated safety and prevention operation, the fuel was successfully evacuated and transferred, and all necessary precautions were implemented to eliminate any further risks.
NSCDC personnel were stationed on-site for continued surveillance to ensure that the situation remained calm and under control.
