NYSC No Longer Accepts Abbreviated Names – NECO Boss

By Noah Ocheni, Lokoja

The Kogi State Coordinator of the National Examinations Council (NECO), Mr. Thaddeus Ajabu, has advised students in tertiary institutions to write their full names, as the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) no longer accepts graduates whose names contain abbreviations.

Ajabu made this statement on Wednesday in Lokoja during a courtesy visit to the Rector of Kogi State Polytechnic, Professor Salisu Ogbo Usman.

He explained that his visit was part of an ongoing sensitization campaign targeting key stakeholders to emphasize the importance of avoiding name abbreviations when registering for the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).

Ajabu also highlighted the need for increased sponsorship of indigent students to enable them to register and sit for the SSCE, calling on the Rector and other stakeholders to help address issues related to name abbreviations.

In response, Professor Usman appreciated the NECO Coordinator and his team for the visit. He suggested that NECO develop a registration template that prevents candidates from using abbreviated names.

He further noted that Kogi State Polytechnic has a strict policy against abbreviated names, except in cases where an affidavit stating the full name is provided for official records.

Additionally, the Rector proposed a collaboration between NECO and the Polytechnic for the conduct of promotion examinations for staff, as part of efforts to enhance quality assurance within the institution.
